New terminal increases capacity in Santos

The port of Santos, the largest of Latin America, will have its container handling capacity increased in nearly 10% in 2011 with the beginning of the Embraport container terminal. The Grupo Coimex and the Odebrecht builder have entered into a partnership for the construction of a new terminal of containers and liquid bulks with capacity for 1.2 million containers and 2 million cubic meters of liquids, mainly ethanol. Embraport will receive an investment of US$ 500 million and it includes, besides the civil works, the equipment for the operation of the terminal. Until October, the port of Santos handled 2.125 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), a growth of 7% in relation to last year's same period, when 1.986 million TEUs were handled. The work, according to the Coimex group, may be ready in 2010 and, according to the estimates of the company, in 2011 it will already be responsible for a great part of the handling of containers of the port of Santos. Embraport will be constructed on the left bank of the port in an area of 800 thousand square meters. Tecon currently the largest terminal for the handling of containers of the Country is also located on the left bank. Until October, 1.056 million TEUs have passed through Tecon, a growth of 15.4% in relation to last year's same period, 914.56 thousand TEUs.
