Jobs in industry at greatest high in 3 years

Valor Econômico - 12/14/2007

The level of employment in the Brazilian industry went up for the fourth consecutive month in October and there was the greatest high since December of 2004, in comparison with last year's same period, according to a research released by the IBGE. In relation to September, the level of employment in the industry registered a 1% increase, in the series free of seasonal influences. As for the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the expansion was 3.4%. In the year, the level of employment reaches a 2% rise, above the 1.8% verified from January to October in 2006. In the accumulated of the last 12 months, it is a 1.8% high. According to the IBGE, the fourth consecutive high confirms the positive moment for employment throughout 2007. In the evaluation of the agency, that is a reflex of the favorable moment of the economy, which has been pushing the industrial activity. The result accumulated in the year is the best of the entire historical series of the Monthly Industrial Research on Job and Salary in the industry, started in 2002, according to economist André Macedo, of IBGE's industry coordination. The economist says the positive data is due to the warming of the domestic market. The number of employed people has increased in 12 of the 18 segments surveyed. The main impacts in the global result have come from the segments of foods and beverages (4.1%), transport equipments (11.2%), machinery and equipments (10.9%), and metal products (9.2%). This performance is due to the external sales, mainly of food commodities (sugar, grains, and frozen meats), to the car industry, and the production of capital goods. On the other hand, the main negative contribution is still from footwear and leather items (- 9.3%), the sector that represents nearly 6% of the workers in the industry.
