Yesterday General Motors confirmed the creation of the third production shift in the plant of São Caetano do Sul, in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo, to starting in March. The measure includes the hiring of 600 temporary employees and a plant production's increase of 50 thousand units, currently at 200 thousand vehicles a year. The agreement was entered between the maker and the Metalworkers Union of São Caetano do Sul last Monday night. According to the maker's vice-president Jose Carlos Pinheiro Neto, GM will produce 250 thousand units in São Caetano, 200 thousand in São José dos Campos (SP), and 200 thousand in Gravataí (RS). "We believe in a 10%-to-15% market growth, reaching 3 million units produced in the year", he affirmed. In 2007, Brazil was responsible for one third of the 300 thousand additional vehicles sold by the maker in the world. At the year end closing, GM cancelled the shutdown to improve its production, and in January it announced sales' growth of 60% compared to the same period of the previous year.
