Tyson Foods negotiates purchase of food company in Brazil

O Estado de S. Paulo - 11/13/2007

Tyson Foods, the North-American giant of the food sector, announced yesterday that it is getting ready to arrive at Brazilian market until the end of this year. The management of the company has informed, during a press conference, that it has signed a letter of intent from which it negotiates the purchase of an average-sized cold-storage company in Brazil. According to some market sources, the negotiation in progress would be with Pena Branca. Pena Branca concentrates the chicken sector in Jaguariúna and Amparo (SP) and slaughters nearly 280 thousand birds a day, 60% of which are exported. The activities of Pena Branca in the Southern region were sold in 2002 to the American group OSI, which currently uses only the Pena Branca trademark. One year ago, the North American company tried to enter into a partnership with Globoaves, a company from the State of Paraná. According to vice-president of the group and CEO of Tyson Foods International, the investments outside the USA are part of a strategy increase the sales from the current US$ 3 billion to US$ 5 billion until 2010. Rafael Weber, food analyst of Geração Futuro, says the entrance of Tyson Foods in Brazil will help the Country to open closed markets, such as the Japanese and the European Union, for the fresh pork meat, and the American and Mexican, for in natura chicken meat.
