Sugarcane and orange help São Paulo lead again in farm income

Valor Econômico

Driven by sugarcane and orange, São Paulo is poised to keep its traditional national leadership in farm income. Preliminary estimates from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA) indicate that the total amount generated by São Paulo’s farms is expected to reach R$77 billion this year, up 2.1% from 2016. Deflated by July’s IPCA inflation, however, the estimated total is 0.6% lower. With increases in harvest and prices, sugarcane is once again the flagship of São Paulo state’s agriculture. But orange is the most significant highlight in 2017, with the IEA forecasting total orange production rising 22% to almost 320 million boxes of 40.8 kilos.
