Orange juice shipments rise 20%

Valor Internacional

After a slew of weather problems affected output in the previous cycle, the 2017/2018 orange crop is starting to recover and bumping up juice exports back to 1 million tonnes. Exports fell 17.2% to 894,700 tonnes of frozen and concentrated orange juice (FCOJ) in 2016/2017, according to official data. Brazil is a major orange juice producer and the recovery of its crop has helped push FCOJ futures down 15% to 20% in New York over the same period of 2017. A stronger than usual influenza epidemic in the US this year has been boosting short-term demand even as overall orange juice consumption suffered from a declining trend in the last few years.
