Province Expanding Opportunities in South American Market

Ontario is opening its newest International Marketing Centre (IMC) in São Paulo, Brazil. The new office fulfils a key commitment of Ontario's Going Global Trade Strategy and the official opening will be marked during a business mission to Brazil led by Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, from January 22-24.

As the world's sixth largest economy, Brazil is among the so-called BRIC countries -- Brazil, Russia, India and China -- characterized by rapid economic growth and strong demand for goods and services. Brazil's economy is generating strong demand in areas where Ontario has expertise including infrastructure development, information technology, agri-food, mining equipment and services, and financial services.

Ontario's network of 11 International Marketing Centres provide an on-the-ground presence in high-potential markets, helping Ontario firms to grow their exports while promoting the province as a destination for investment.

Making Ontario more globally competitive is part of the government's plan to invest in people, build modern infrastructure and support a dynamic and innovative business climate.

•Ontario has IMCs in São Paulo, New York, San Francisco, Mexico City, London, Paris, Munich, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo and New Delhi (including a satellite office in Mumbai).

•Co-located in a Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate, each IMC is led by a Senior Economic Officer (an Ontario employee), supported by one or two local staff members. The co-location model has proven to be cost-effective and strengthens federal-provincial cooperation.

•Since April 2013, Ontario’s IMC network has assisted more than 350 companies to access export markets, while contributing to nine investment projects that will secure more than 250 jobs in the province.

•According to the Conference Board of Canada, every $100-million increase in exports creates approximately 1,000 new jobs.
