The Taiwanese company Foxconn, the world’s largest manufacturer of consumer-electronics, started the construction works of its new plant in the city of Itu. With the environmental licenses obtained this year, Foxconn started the earthworks in November last year. The unit is expected to starts operations by the end of 2015.

The first phase of the project, estimated to end in 2016, will rely on a R$ 400 million investment for the construction and operation of a unit covering 40,000 square meters and will generate approximately 5,000 new job opportunities. With that, Foxconn will have approximately 10,000 employees in the State of São Paulo.

Investe São Paulo, the State Government investment promotion agency associated with the Department of Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation has been assisting the project since February 2010.

“Foxconn is the example of a company that received our full attention. We helped in the process to find the location, in environmental, tax and infrastructure issues, always working in parallel with the company’s strategy. We know that the work is just beginning, and we are looking forward to seeing the results of such an important project for the State and for Brazil,” said the president of Investe SP, Luciano Almeida.

In total, it is expected that the plant in Itu generates approximately 10,000 direct jobs that will be created throughout all phases of the project.

“What we see in Itu is its very differentiated capacity among the municipalities of São Paulo – and why not say among the cities of Brazil – for being the city chosen by the multinational accredited as the largest manufacturer of electronic products in the world. In addition to providing a massive number of job opportunities, the company should confirm the city’s tendency to become a huge technological hub, attracting other industries in the segment,” said the mayor of Itu, Antonio Tuíze.

The production in the other plants of Foxconn in Brazil will not change with the new plant in Itu. The company’s goal is to increase local production, bringing new technologies to the manufacture of computers and electronic products.

It will be the sixth plant of the company in Brazil. The process of choosing the location of the new factory took over two years. Several municipalities were visited in the state of São Paulo, in addition to cities in other States.

São Paulo was chosen to receive the new factory of Foxconn due to the proximity of suppliers and the consumer market. The location of Itu, which is near the company’s units in Jundiaí and Indaiatuba, besides the qualified workforce in the region, were also determining factors for the company's decision.

The company will hire employees specialized in engineering, information technology, and in the administrative sector.
