On September 18, the president of Investe São Paulo, Luciano Almeida, participated in one of the panels of the 4th Seminar on Airport Infrastructure of Latin America. The event, organized by Sators, was held in conjunction with the Airport Infra Expo & Aviation Infra Expo until Friday, at Expo Center Norte, bringing together entrepreneurs and professionals in the airport sector to discuss and propose solutions and ideas on the subject.

Almeida participated in a panel within the session “Airport and City - Aviation and Economic Development”, whose theme was: “The role of the state or municipality with regard to the airports in their cities - How to involve the community and discuss the advantages of the airport?”.

“Airports are always inducers of jobs, development and welfare, even when the economic scenario is not the most favorable,” said Almeida during the debate. “Today, we have a repressed demand in this sector and there is the opportunity to transform it into a driver of growth.”

He also highlighted the importance of the State of São Paulo as a hub of Latin America. “Today, São Paulo concentrates more than 50% of cargo carried in the airports operated by Infraero in the country, in addition to 30% of passengers and 26% of takeoffs and landings. This is one of the main reasons that makes the state capital concentrate the headquarters of multinationals and be the economic and financial hub of Brazil,” he explained.

The executive also pointed out that the aerospace and defense sector is strategic for Investe São Paulo, especially due to the value it adds to the economy and the skilled jobs that are generated by this industry. The portfolio of projects in this segment in the agency has the potential to generate R$ 1.4 billion in investments and 10,000 jobs.

The session started with a presentation by Marco Barbosa, from L3 Communications, who presented the airport defense products offered by the company. Then, the president of Urban Systems, Thomaz Eduardo Barbosa, presented the project “Airport and City”. The project was conducted at the request of the municipality of Campinas. The purpose is to create a system where the airport of Viracopos is able to develop in an integrated manner with the metropolitan region of the city.

“We need to combine efforts of governments, companies and utilities and stop thinking in terms of equity and property. We need to think in terms of economy and connectivity, developing clusters and integrating the logistics system of the region with the State of São Paulo and the country,” he said.

The Secretary of Economic and Social Development and Tourism of Campinas, Samuel Rosilho, also talked about the projects of the municipality for the development of Viracopos and its surrounding area: “We are privileged for being able to participate in this historic moment that is the full development of an airport of this size. But we also have a great responsibility, which is to work on a long term project for the integration of this airport with the community.”

The commercial director of Viracopos, Aluísio Margarido, also participated in the panel.
