São Paulo is the State with most cities visited by World Cup tourists

Tourists were in 66 municipalities in all the State’s regions. The capital alone received around 250 thousand visitors

São Paulo was number the one on municipalities visited by foreigners during the World Cup, according to a research done by the Tourism Ministry along with Fundação Getúlio Vargas. Tourists visited 66 municipalities total. São Paulo was also top provider of local people visiting other states to watch the Cup matches – 858,825.

São Paulo’s capital, which hosted six matches in the Itaquerão (Arena Corinthians/Arena São Paulo) Stadium, has received approximately 250 thousand visitors, which correspond to 41,6% of the total in the whole country, again according to the Tourism Ministry. Close by the capital are the coastal cities, which, excluding the capital, were all top 10 in the tourists’ search.

Santos came up first with 8,141 visits. Guarujá, Ubatuba and São Sebastião, where the most well-known beaches of São Paulo are, received a total of 9.8 thousand visits of foreign tourists. Also visited by tourists were countryside cities such as Campinas, Ribeirão Preto and São José dos Campos, which received 6,417 visits.

After São Paulo, the states with most visited cities are Grande do Sul (49 cities), Minas Gerais (35), Bahia (28), Santa Catarina (23) and Rio de Janeiro (23). The survey also states that Brazil has received 1.01 million tourists of 203 different nationalities. They visited a grand total of 378 municipalities, including the 12 host cities.
