On April 17, Governor Geraldo Alckmin participated in the event that marks the completion of the construction of Honda’s new plant, in the city of Itirapina, São Paulo. In this new phase, the company begins the installation of equipment for the production of vehicles. The activities should start by the end of 2015.

During the event, the governor highlighted the importance of the partnership between Honda and Brazil. “This is the profile of São Paulo: innovation, investment and creation of jobs,” he said.

The construction of the new plant relied on the support from the State Government through the funding of part of the project by Desenvolve SP – São Paulo Development Agency and also from Investe São Paulo, investment promotion agency associated with the Department of Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation.

“The construction of the new plant of the Japanese automaker in São Paulo, in addition to allowing the creation of jobs and income, will involve an entire chain of small and medium enterprises that will be able to rely on Desenvolve SP to finance their projects,” said Milton Luiz de Melo Santos, president of Desenvolve SP.

“We have assisted Honda’s project since 2012, providing strategic information about the industry, helping it find the location and in environmental licensing and infrastructure matters. It makes us very proud to be able to assist a project of this magnitude, which will certainly activate an entire chain of suppliers within the state, encouraging economic growth and job creation,” said the president of Investe São Paulo, Juan Quirós.

According to the multinational, the total amount invested in the project was R$ 1 billion, which will allow doubling its production capacity in the country, reaching 240,000 units/year, and generate 2,000 direct jobs and stimulate the production chain of small and medium industry suppliers in the region.

The president of Honda South America, Issao Mizoguchi, highlighted how positive was the support received from the Government for the construction of the new plant. “It is an honor for us, Honda, to invest in São Paulo and Brazil. I appreciate the support we received from the governor Geraldo Alckmin and his entire team,” he said.

The Mayor of Itirapina, José Maria Cândido, commented on the city’s choice to receive the investment. “Honda is located in the most important corner of Brazil, in the intersection between the highways Washington Luis and Engenheiro Paulo Nilo Romano. In addition, we have universities and excellent infrastructure,” he said.

At the end of the event, Honda’s committee of directors and journalists visited all the premises of the plant and was impressed with the infrastructure available. The plant, which covers an area of 5.8 million square meters, will start its operations with the production of the new Honda Fit.
