Exports reached USD 3 bn in first week of the year

Average daily foreign sales from Brazil were up 9.1%, the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services said, leading to a USD 513 million surplus in the first week of 2018

Exports from Brazil reached USD 2.957 billion in the first week of the year, with average daily sales going up 9.1% to USD 739.3 million from USD 677.6 million in January 2017, the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services said this Monday (8).

Imports to Brazil came out to USD 2.444 billion, leading to a USD 513 million trade surplus.

The Ministry said exports went up on the back of finished goods, whose sales were up 23.5%, driven by aircraft, cast iron pipes, aircraft engines and turbines, aluminum oxides and hydroxides, taps, valves and parts.

Semi-finished goods exports also went up, by 1.7%, especially semi-finished iron and steel, cast iron, ferroalloys and copper cathodes. Basic goods exports dropped slightly, by 0.05%.

Average daily imports climbed 10.2% to USD 610.9 million last week, up from USD 554.4 million in January 2017, driven by organic and inorganic chemicals, autos and auto parts, pharmaceuticals, plastic and plastic products, and customer electronics.
