The International and Institutional Relations Director of Investe São Paulo, Sérgio Costa, participated, on December 16, as a speaker in the ABIMED (Brazilian Association of Industry and High Technology of Equipment) Annual Meeting, held at Espaço Apep.

At the event, the discussed topics were related to improvements and challenges that the health care product industry, which represents 0.6% of Brazil's GDP and generates 147,000 jobs, needs to face to overcome the economic crisis and continue rising.
Costa presented the work Investe São Paulo makes to attract investments in the area and put the agency's services at the disposal of the companies. "Investe São Paulo is working to attract companies that can consolidate the state as a cluster of all industries related to Health Care."

During the lecture, the director remembered that the law authorizing foreign investment to the sector will facilitate the formation of new national and international partnerships, access to new technologies and exchange of information and knowledge. According to him, this fact represents a great development opportunity for the country and especially for the state of São Paulo, which has the largest market of medical and hospital equipment in Latin America, in addition to concentrating 40% of all direct foreign investments.

"Despite the instability of the economy, the pharmaceutical market in Brazil is expected to grow between 7-10% per year until 2020. For that, it is essential that we have a strategic planning of quality and control of the goals and results," affirmed Costa.

Some of the suggestions made by the director of the Agency to strengthen the health care sector were: investing in new R&D centers and Technology Parks, encouraging public-private partnerships, and opening up the market for innovative companies and startups.

Fabrício Campolina, president of ABIMED's Board of Directors, also exposed the objectives of the association: "Our intention is to increasingly contribute to the consolidation of a macroeconomic environment based on ethics and innovation, focused primarily on the sustainability of the country's health system," he concluded.
